Mittens

A safe bed for *Mittens

Meet Mittens, a loyal and loving cat who provided constant comfort to her human-mum, Olivia. But at home, neither of them was safe.

“She’s my little security guard, my shadow, my emotional support. If I was exercising in the backyard, she was there—rain or shine. If I was sick, she wouldn’t leave my side. She’s more like a dog than a cat! But I wasn’t safe at home. I feared for my life, and I couldn’t risk Mittens being hurt if I left her behind.”

– Olivia

When Olivia reached out to Pet Refuge, we made sure Mittens had a safe place to go. For deeply bonded pets like Mittens, arriving at a shelter can be overwhelming, so we take extra care to ease the transition. Each pet gets quiet time to settle in before our team assesses what kind of environment will make them feel most at home.

Some cats prefer private hideaways, while others thrive in our shared catios. For Mittens, a cozy glass-front catio was the perfect spot—giving her a front-row seat to all the shelter’s activities while still feeling secure.

Mittens the cat

Most importantly, Mittens’ safe bed came with love and care while Olivia took the first steps toward rebuilding her life.

“I was so relieved when Pet Refuge stepped in. I was at a breaking point, torn between my own safety and the thought of leaving Mittens behind. Without their help, I might have had to go back. It wasn’t safe. It wasn’t healthy. It was a godsend.” – Olivia

Now, Mittens is back where she belongs—safe at home with Olivia. But so many more pets like her need a place to stay, a place that feels like home.
